Advisory & care
Before and after your therapy
A little preparation, and a little rest afterwards, makes the most of every treatment.
Advisory notes
In the first therapy your medical history and some questions on health and lifestyle will be taken and recorded as part of your consultation; this should only take 10–15 minutes. The information you give will be treated in the strictest confidence according to the Data Protection Act. It may be necessary in some cases to consult your GP before any therapy can be given.
It is advisable to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
I recommend that you have time to rest after the therapy in order to enjoy and fully maximise the benefits. Drink plenty of water and avoid heavy meals, alcohol or caffeine afterwards, as the demands of digestion divert energy away from the natural healing process. Light snacks, fresh fruit or raw vegetables are ideal.
Although a single therapy will be enjoyable, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of therapies will bring the most benefits. It may take time for the benefits to be noticed, as some people respond quicker than others.
After care advice
During or following a therapy you may experience emotions you have been bottling up, or symptoms that may have been suppressed with medication. This 'healing crisis' (contra-action) is a normal, positive effect, especially if you have never had a massage before or if your body is very stressed. With regular therapies, as the body starts to heal and re-balance, these after effects will diminish.
Tiredness
Some people suffer varying degrees of tiredness. This is a signal that your mind and body need rest to recuperate and recharge.
Muscular aches and soreness
Usually due to toxins being released and muscle tension and joint movements becoming unblocked.
Headache
Usually due to toxins being released into the bloodstream. Allow yourself to drink plenty of water.
Heightened emotional state
Not an unusual reaction — you might feel low or tearful, especially if you have been bottling up feelings.
Frequent urination
Due to stimulation of the lymphatic system.
Changed sleep patterns
You can fall asleep during the therapy, and a state of relaxation may help you sleep better.
Active bowels
Body systems, including the digestive system, will work better.
Spots may occur
Released toxins and hormones may surface through the skin, especially if a skin condition was previously suppressed.
Change in body temperature
You may feel hot and flushed or cold and shivery in response to improved circulation and general relaxation.
Any contra-action symptoms you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 24 hours. Regular treatments will help prevent future stress accumulating.
